How to Plan a Stress-Free Penn State Graduation Photo Session

Being a busy student and carrying a lot on your plate IS stressful. I remember those days clear as ever. The good news is your graduation photos get to be FUN rather than an added task on your checklist. With a little planning and the right Penn State photographer, the entire experience will feel easy and celebratory.

This guide is perfect for those who want a smooth, well-planned photo session!

Tip 1: Start Early for the Best Experience

The biggest tip I can give you for a stress-free PSU graduation session is to inquire early.

I recommend reaching out in January or February (or the semester prior to your final one!) and booking your session for March or April. This timing helps you avoid long lines at popular campus locations and gives you more flexibility with scheduling. It also ensures your images are fully edited and ready well before graduation celebrations begin. Perfect for parties, announcements, and posts!

Earlier sessions mean fewer crowds, more time, and a calmer experience overall.

Why March and April Are Ideal:

  • March and April are the prime months for Penn State graduation photography.
  • Campus is less crowded, popular spots like Old Main and the Lion Shrine are easier to access, and we can move at a relaxed pace without feeling rushed. You get beautiful images and a much more enjoyable experience.

Tip 2: Plan Ahead of Time

With Cate Bodner Photography, planning is KEY! The planning process is the second most important part of our time together. The first, most important part is your experience and final images! ;)

Every session includes a Zoom consultation before your session. During our call, we walk through all of your session details together. We decide on start time, choose locations, plan how we will move around campus, and make sure we budget the right amount of time for each spot.

We also get to meet ahead of time, which helps everyone feel comfortable and confident on session day. By the time we are taking photos, everything already feels familiar and easy.

Tip 3: Your success checklist

A few small things can make a big difference on session day. Here are a few simple tips to keep your session stress-free:

  • Try on your outfits ahead of time so everything fits and feels good
  • Bring comfortable walking shoes for moving around campus
  • Pick up your cap and gown early from the Penn State bookstore
  • Bring water, lip balm, and a snack just in case
  • Reach out anytime with questions before your session
  • You do not need to know how to pose or worry about what to do. I will guide you through everything - I've got you!

Enjoy the Moment.
